[GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

Tharindu Mathew
Hi,

Are there any project ideas for GSoC 2013 from the axis2/c project? I'm interested in participating in GSoC this year and thought the Axis2/C project would have some good ideas, as the last release was made some time ago.

Hi Tharindu,

Thank you for your interest in contributing to Axis2/C. You might find "Enhanced REST support for Axis2/C", [1] to be interesting. If you are willing to work on [1], we'd also appreciate some help putting together a release around [1] and other improvements/fixes for Axis2/C.

Best Regards,
Senaka.

Hi Tharindu,

As Senaka said It would be great to have some help in putting together a new release, there are many issues regarding stability in the framework which I think affect usability I think (mostly bugs that need to be fixed) if you want I can make you a list of the bugs that it would be helpful to fix before the release...

Thanks for your interest

That would be great Alex, but I sort of have to submit a proposal within 3 hours. It would be great to have a list of bugs around REST support. I can probably include those as part of the project.

Re: [GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

Alex Mantaut
Hi Tharindu,
I don't know much about the REST support, but the issues I mentioned affect all the project (because of thread unstablility)  Can they be included as part of the project? (because they affect usability, and scare off new users)
If you want an example of an issue regarding that see: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AXIS2C-1584 and related issues...

thanks for your help
Alex

Re: [GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

Tharindu Mathew
I've submitted the proposal. It is available at https://google-melange.appspot.com/gsoc/proposal/review/google/gsoc2013/mccloud35/1#

Alex, I need to limit the scope for the proposal and provide some definite deliverables. I would be glad to help out with the issues you point out as time permits.

Re: [GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

Alex Mantaut
I've looked at your proposal, it's nice to see interest on reviving the framework...

Regarding JSON support, it was implemented in an unofficial repository (https://code.google.com/p/axis2c-unofficial/) perhaps someone would like to have those changes ported to the project (in order to save effort)?

I understand perfectly the need to narrow the scope in order to deliver, still if you can spare some time to make the framework more stable it would be appreciated (I'm concerned that all the segfaults and memory leaks scare new users away, regardless of the new features)

Again thanks for your patience and help
Regards

This is great. Re-using this might allow me to concentrate on a few bugs that affect the framework. As this will be a learning process for me for the code base, I of course will have to start with the easier ones :)

Re: [GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

Tharindu Mathew
Hi Alex,

There seem to be a lot of interesting fixes on this unofficial release... we can try to get them all into the main trunk... when you say you want to fix all the memory leaks and threading issues, do you just want to port the fixes to the main release?

I've looked at your proposal, it's nice to see interest on reviving the framework...

Regarding JSON support, it was implemented in an unofficial repository (https://code.google.com/p/axis2c-unofficial/) perhaps someone would like to have those changes ported to the project (in order to save effort)?

I understand perfectly the need to narrow the scope in order to deliver, still if you can spare some time to make the framework more stable it would be appreciated (I'm concerned that all the segfaults and memory leaks scare new users away, regardless of the new features)

Again thanks for your patience and help

Re: [GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

Alex Mantaut
Hi,
Yes there are many fixes in the unofficial release... it would be nice to have those changes reviewed and incorporated to trunk. Please notice that this release was created from 1.6 branch for stability so some parts will need to be adjusted, and some bugs may be already fixed in trunk.

When I say fixing mem leaks and threading issues, some of those issues are already fixed in this unofficial repository, but there are many issues that haven't been fixed yet (specially async calls, and crashes under high load while using multiple clients) I've been working on making trunk more stable and proposed several patches, but I need some feedback on them in order to continue...

If you need help porting code from the unofficial rep please let us know, I'm really interested in making Axis2/C more stable, and getting a new release

Regards

Re: [GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

damitha kumarage-2
HI Devs,
I would like contribute to a 1.7 release. To start with I am starting to write some tests based on this [1]. There are so many patches not applied to the trunk accumulated over years. Testing manually after applying each patch would be a headache. So before anything I need to apply more tests to this framework. I'll update progress.

Re: [GSoC 2013] Project Ideas?

Dumindu Pallewela-2
In reply to this post by damitha kumarage-2
Definitely a good idea. Guess this is also a reason for why the release was dragged on for long. Hopefully I can find time to help with this as well.

Regards,
Dumindu.

Hi,
Yes there are many fixes in the unofficial release... it would be nice to have those changes reviewed and incorporated to trunk.
